Thinking makes it so

27 October 2014

A client visited me the other day. She was visibly distressed by her own emotional situation. We talked for about thirty minutes about how she was feeling. I was finding it hard to move her away from her own drama and the situation she was in.

I really understood where she was at. We have all been in desperately lonely places where our personal world seems bleak.

I think it is part of being a human being; feelings can dominate us at a time when we really need to move on.

Eventually, to help her, I said, “Do you realise most people do not think?”

She said, “My goodness. You are right. Most people do not think, I have been caught up in my feelings and stopped thinking.”

She explained she was a florist and whenever she picked up a flower to create a large display she actually thought about the flower, how to position it, the way in which the flowers shape and structure needed light and space. As she creates, the flowers come to life and the display appears to dance. This is why her business is so successful.

She said she loved this thinking process; it was to her a meditation and made her feel connected to something greater than herself.

As she gathered her thoughts back into her conscious mind and out of her emotions she changed her persona immediately. She sat up, gathered her things together and started to move into action.

It was a joy to see the results and be part of her immediate change of focus. It doesn’t mean she will not have other emotional outbursts. Of course she will. But on this occasion the words hit a nerve and she got the message.

I have been in situations were the emotions in my life dominate my day. I find it absolutely incredible to watch the manner in which I move through the mood swings and drama within myself.

I use triggers to move me forward. Normally it is the memory of particular people, their attitudes and how they function in life.

I have an aunt, Ethel; she was 100 when she died. Whenever I find myself having to do something I really don’t want to do I think about her. It is remarkable how this simple change of focus on to Aunt Ethel moves me into action. She was a fearless soul who would attempt anything and had a sense of humour to match. I loved her devil may care attitude. She had amazing standards and maintained them right to the end of her life. She was indomitable.

When I am in an emotional turmoil I think of her. And in a flash I am out of that silly mindset and on to something better.

It all starts with the conscious mind and then the subconscious mind. Which one do you want to dominate you?

Take control of your thinking and you have control of your life. When you allow negative emotions to dominate, you are on the way to ruin.

You are the creator of your own destiny – it comes down to you.
